The South Carolina Policy Council is the state's leading voice for limited government, free enterprise and individual liberty and responsibility. It was founded in 1986 as a non-profit, non-partisan, independent public policy research organization. Now, more than 24 years later, we are leading the fight to make South Carolina the most free market state in the nation--the Policy Council is Unleashing Capitalism.
Capitalism is not a new approach to prosperity - it's the only approach. Nothing except the free market has ever produced wealth for citizens of any state or nation. What is new, however, is the energetic "reform movement" to bring it back to South Carolina that was launched by the release of Unleashing Capitalism: A Prescription for Economic Prosperity in South Carolina.
Unleashing Capitalism was written by a group of national and South Carolina-based economists as a guidebook for free market policy reforms, including: tax policy, education reform and government restructuring. It outlines a plan to empower those who can actually generate wealth and create jobs, South Carolinians--and proposes a dynamic shift in power from lawmakers to private citizens.
The reforms in Unleashing Capitalism will lead to greater economic freedom - the only way to ensure South Carolina is a competitive state with a thriving community of businesses and consumers.
Unleashing Capitalism's most powerful voice is the Independence Club, a network of more than 1,000 South Carolinians who own, operate and work for independent businesses in our state. Speaking as one voice, the Independence Club will be heard at the Capital.
Unleashing Capitalism is edited by Dr. Peter T. Calcagno, Professor of Economics, College of Charleston. It was first published as a plan for West Virginia by Dr. Russell S. Sobel.
